The Hotel Arqueólogo is situated just a five-minute walk from Cusco’s Main Square “Plaza de Armas”, in the traditional San Cristobal neighborhood, with its narrow streets and Inca walls, colonial-era balconies and baroque churches. During the Inca period, our street was one of the main avenues of the imperial capital, connecting the center of the city with the great fortress of Saqsaywaman.
Situated at 3,350 m. above sea level, Cusco is the oldest inhabited city of the Americas and today’s archaeological capital of the Americas. Once the heart of the grand Incan Empire, the magnificent city of Cusco today, is by far a world´s top destination. The gateway to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, this city thriving with colonial influence was built on the hefty stone foundations of the Incas. Massive Inca-built walls line steep, narrow cobblestone streets and the lovely plazas are many and abound. Here you’ll have the opportunity to step back in time to an ancient culture that harmoniously manages to combine its historic traditions with today’s modern landscape.
The ancient Lost City of Machu Picchu is the most important surviving vestige of the great Inca Empire of Tahuantinsuyo. Lost for almost 500 years, this mysterious city nestled in the high forests of the Andes was rediscovered by the Yale historian Hiram Bingham in 1911.
Visitors can choose to trek the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu or ride there in style by train.
Other attractions around Cusco include the Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Pisaq, Chincheros, and Ollantaytambo, the Inca agricultural terraces at Moray, and the Maras salt pans, all of which are easily accessible from our hotel.
In Peru we are proud of our past and our present, from colonial-era Lima and the Nazca Lines on the coast to Machu Picchu in the heart of the Andes, Lake Titicaca on Peru’s high southern plains, and the enormous biological diversity of the Peruvian Amazon basin.
